Why your race swim is slower than the pool

A pool 100m time is your best case. In open water you lose time to sighting, no push-offs from walls, chop, and swimming slightly off-line — typically 5–10% for age-groupers. A wetsuit gives some of that back through buoyancy. Use the projection as a planning number, then confirm your race’s wetsuit rules and practise open water before race day.
